How to Choose Paraffin Wax for Candle Making

There are rich kinds of raw material for candle making. At one time, most candles were made from beeswax. At present, paraffin, gel and vegetable wax are more popular. Of them, paraffin is the most common type of wax used in candle making.

Paraffin waxes are actually petroleum-based wax. As a natural product, it has these general properties: non-toxic, non-reactive, excellent water barrier, clean-burning fuel source and colorless. Compared with other waxes, the scent throw is stronger in paraffin and candle dyes dissolve and disperses much easier in molten mineral wax, resulting in a beautifully even coloured candle.

There are two key factors influencing paraffin wax’s quality and application: oil content and melting point. The rating of the paraffin wax qualities is generally based on their content in oleaginous oil:

  • Crude paraffin: about 5-15%

  • Semi-refined paraffin: about 0.5-5%

  • Fully refined paraffin: about 0-0.5%

For clear and safe burning, we usually choose semi-refined and fully refined paraffin wax for candle making. Of course, the best choice is fully refined paraffin wax.

Each type of wax is divided into different varieties according to the melting point, generally every 2 ℃, such as 52, 54, 56, 58 and so on. Different melting points have effect on its properties. The melting point is the primary determinant of the type of candle you can make with it.

  • Low melt point paraffin (less than 130F) is used for container candles in jars, cups or glasses

  • Medium melt point paraffin (130F-150F) is used for candles that need to stand on their own – votives, pillars, and other molded candles

  • High melt point wax (greater than 150F) is used for more special applications like hurricane candle shells, over-dipping, and other special candle making applications
